How do I properly care for my clip in hair extensions?

Creating a good routine with your clip in hair extensions from day 1 will help prolong their lifespan. Since they are made from 100% human Remy hair they can be styled and washed similar to your natural hair. However, the more you wash and heat style your extensions, the shorter their lifespan will be (The lifespan of the hair depends on how often you wash the extensions and use heat tools to style and dry the hair). It is very important to limit heat on your hair extensionsUnlike your own hair, which receives natural hydration from the oils produced by your scalp, hair extensions don’t have a natural hydration source. Therefore, keeping them hydrated using only quality products is essential to them being shiny and in good condition.

How do I wash my clip in hair extensions?

Peach Hair extensions are made with 100% Remy human hair, which means they can be washed and styled just like your own natural hair. Since your extensions aren't directly receiving the oils produced by your scalp the way your natural hair is, you don’t need to wash them as often. The less you wash your extensions the better actually. Use your best judgment on how often to wash them, but we recommend only washing them once there is a noticeable amount of product build up.

      1. Brush your clip in extensions thoroughly

One of the most important steps is to brush your extensions out before washing them and only once the hair is 80%-90% dry. We highly recommend using a wet brush that will glide through the hair. This helps minimize any possibility of breakage and shedding because the hair is at its weakest point when wet. Keep in mind it is also more common to breakage when wet. Then, stack each weft on top of each other to keep them tangle free during the washing process.

      2. Prepare your sink

Ensure your sink is clean in order to avoid any existing dirt transferring onto the extensions, or use a large bowl. Once ready, plug the drain and begin to fill it up with lukewarm water, or fill the bowl up three-quarters full. Be sure that the water is not too hot, as this opens up the hair cuticle and moisture leaves the strand more easily, leading to dry hair. Pump 2-3 dollops of shampoo into the water and swish it around with your hand to spread the shampoo evenly and create foam.

      3. Shampoo

It's highly recommend using a moisturizing sulfate free and alcohol free conditioner before and after shampooing. Any drug store brands are not recommended for the clip in extensions. You can even skip the shampoo and only wash your extensions with conditioner to help prolong their lifespan.

Wash each weft one at a time, to prevent tangling and to ensure each weft is washed thoroughly.

Hold the weft at the top, submerge it into the water, and gently wash the hair, working the shampoo in with light strokes. When washing, make sure to handle the extensions gently and to not rub them as you would with your natural hair. Once you have washed the weft in the shampoo water, set it aside on a towel and repeat the same steps for the rest of the wefts individually.

      4. Condition, condition, condition!

Once all the wefts have been shampooed, it's time to condition them. Take a generous amount of conditioner and apply onto each weft from top to bottom, massaging the product thoroughly into the hair. Alternatively, you can also comb through conditioner with a wide tooth comb. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse out each weft thoroughly. As a general rule, the longer you leave it on the better.

      5. Keep conditioning with a hair mask

This step is important to ensure that your hair extensions remain soft, and hydrated. Just like your conditioner, take a good about of the hair mask and work the product into each weft from top to bottom. The longer, the better. If you have the time, bundle your extensions and carefully coil them and place them in a shower cap to leave overnight. This will help to seal in the moisture throughout the night.

      6. Rinse out each weft

The next morning rinse out each weft ensuring that there is no conditioner left.  Do not leave your hair extensions with the slippery conditioner feel.  If you leave the conditioner in the hair it will weigh down your clip in hair extensions, appear greasy, and be difficult to style. So ensure that the conditioner is thoroughly washed out. Use cold water as it will help close the cuticles of the hair and seal in the moisture. It will also help the extensions keep their shine!

      7. Lay each weft out to air dry

Remove any excess water from the extensions with a towel. It's highly recommend air drying your extensions when possible. When air drying, invest in a microfiber towel as it will remove excess water faster and it won’t rough up the hair which can cause tangles. We also recommend using a light leave in conditioner to keep them smooth and soft.

Gently pat any extra moisture from the hair after laying them flat on the microfiber towel. You're able to apply a small amount of hair oil to each weft from the top down to ensure the hair remains smooth. Don't be overly generous as too much product will weigh the extensions down.

If you are going to blow dry your extensions, be sure to use a heat protectant spray/leave in conditioner prior to blow drying to extend the lifespan of your hair extensions. The most important thing is to ensure that you are blow drying on a cool setting to prevent any heat damage and that you don’t brush the hair until it is 80%- 90% dry. When blow drying, start by drying the root of the weft first and then work your way down to the mids and ends. Always blow dry downwards as this will help smooth the cuticle and also will prevent the hair from getting tangled.

      8. Comb each weft

You must be gentle as combing the extensions wet is usually not recommended, as this is when the hair is at its most fragile state. But, in order to ensure that your extensions dry smooth, you can make an exception. Gently brush through each weft with a wide tooth comb or a wetbrush gently.

Leave the wefts to dry, and come back to clean smooth, hair extensions, ready to style or clip into your hair.

How do I prevent tangling, matting and limit shedding?

Fortunately, there are some simple ways to reduce shedding and ensure that your hair extensions remain smooth and tangle free.

Brush your hair often

The first and possibly one of the most important steps is to brush your extensions out before washing them and only once the hair is 90% dry. Keep in mind it is also more prone to breakage when wet. Instead, use your fingers to gently loosen any tangles. Always gently brush your extensions before and after each use to reduce shedding and breakage. You can do this by starting to brush at the ends and making your way up to the roots.

Personally I carry a mini wet brush at all times with me to help. Alternatively, you can use a wide tooth comb or a soft bristle brush. Always have a brush in your bag, so that even when you’re out and about you can still give your hair a quick brush.

Keep your hair extensions moisturized

Keeping your extensions moisturized is essential. They don’t have a natural hydration source like your own hair does. If you are brushing your extensions throughout the day and you notice dryness or some minor breakage, apply a pearl size amount of a lightweight hair oil. Always apply it from the mids of the hair down to the ends and follow by brushing the extensions to evenly distribute the product throughout. As previously mentioned, using too much product will cause buildup so less is more.

Use the proper hair products

The proper hair products make all the difference in whether your extensions will tangle or be soft and manageable. Purchase products specifically formulated for dry and damaged hair, as they will help keep the strands healthy and nourished. Also, look for products that add moisture to the hair. Purchasing sulfate and alcohol free products is needed as they are helpful to maintain the health of your extensions. These ingredients strip the hair of its natural oils and will affect their integrity. This makes the hair drier and more prone to tangling or matting. Hydrate your hair extensions

When you notice your extensions getting dry or tangled, you can apply a deep conditioning treatment or mask without washing. This will hydrate and restore some moisture back into them as well as help make them softer and more manageable to style. All you need to do is dampen your extensions and apply a generous amount of a deep conditioning treatment or conditioner to the hair, and let it soak in the product for a few hours or overnight by placing it in a shower cap or a plastic bag. Rinse off in cold water as normal the next day.

Limit heat styling and always use a heat protectant

We do not recommend blow drying your extensions after every wash as doing this constantly will make them dry and more prone to breakage. The less heat, the better. It's highly recommend air drying your extensions for the safest route as this will also prevent against tangles. We also always suggest using a heat protectant spray prior to using any heat styling tool to help extend the lifespan of your hair extensions. Also we recommend to only use a low heat setting as anything high runs the risk of damaging the hair and drying it out.

Limit the use of heavy hair products

Limiting the number of products you apply to the hair will help with tangling. Using sticky products such as hairspray and hair gel can make you extensions feel coated. The more products you use, the more you will need to wash your extensions which will not prolong their life span. Also, keep in mind that any products that you use on your natural hair can transfer onto your extensions.

If you do want to reach for hairspray, consider a lightweight formula which you can still easily brush through or a light texture spray.

Store your clip in hair extensions neatly

Starting a good storage routine from the moment you start wearing your new extensions is essential as it will prevent tangling and matting in the future. Always brush your extensions before and after each use.

Remove your clip in hair extensions before sleeping

Clip in hair extensions should always be removed before sleeping, as they can get extremely tangled throughout the night if worn to bed. It can also damage your own natural hair wearing them to bed. Removing them daily will maintain the integrity of the hair. You can store your hair extensions in the Peach Hair Extensions bag coiled up or an airtight shoebox or container.

Do not swim with hair extensions in

One of the most important things when wearing clip in hair extensions is to not wear them while swimming or taking a shower. You can wear them to the beach or to the pool but, we do not recommend getting into the water with them unless you plan on not getting the hair wet.

As your own natural hair feels dry and tangled after swimming in a chlorinated pool or salt water, your clip in hair extensions will also feel that way.  Chlorine from swimming pools, salt from ocean water, and dirt in all bodies of water can be damaging to your hair extensions. Swimming with your extensions clipped in may lead to the extensions tangling with your natural hair, which can be damaging on both ends.

Avoid working out with your hair extensions in

Avoid doing any physical activity that could lead to excessive sweat, when you are wearing hair extensions. Your sweat is salty, acidic and can dry out your hair extensions so this could lead to additional matting and tangling. This will make your clip in extensions lifespan shorter. Be sure to un-clip them before heading to do physical activity.

What is the best way to store my clip in hair extensions?

It is very important to get into a good storage routine with your hair extensions from the start because good habits will equal longer lasting extensions. It only takes a few minutes to properly store them.

Storage Routine Breakdown

  1. After removing your hair extensions, ensure that all of the clips are closed shut.

  2. Brush each weft carefully by starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots.

  3. Place your extensions in the Peach Hair Extensions bag they came in, coiled up or a storage box or a storage case.

  4. Always ensure you store your extensions in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight (like a closet, cabinet or dresser drawer). Also, ensure your extensions are completely dry when storing to prevent mold and other bacteria from growing.

I need to return/exchange my extensions. Am I able too?

Yes! As long as the seal is not broken on the hair extensions you are able to exchange for another color or receive a full refund.
